What I learned from the Olympics about Business Visibility

If you don’t stay visible, you run the risk of being forgotten

I love the Olympics! The coming together of the best athletes from around the world in competition striving towards the goals of “faster, higher, stronger” is not only a great spectacle, but a chance for the sports nut to get 4 years worth of sports you never to be seen until the next quadrennial. For two weeks I can get my fill of Skeleton, Bobsleigh, Short Track Speed Skating, and Biathlon – we gather with friends to cheer on our country’s premiere athletes and make silly predictions that sound like this:

“Wow I really love this ski cross! It’s so exciting. I’m going to be sure to follow it once the Olympics are over!”

Now that the Olympic torch has gone out, the all-hours sports rave has turned into a lingering hangover, our attention has shifted to other more alluring things such as prime time TV, professional sports or for some of us: work! Those intriguing sports that delighted and entertained are a distant memory.
Why are we so eager to fully embrace a sport, an athlete, a medal count – only to quickly forget about it a few days, weeks or months later?

You may have run into this problem in your business. You get a new client who is interested and enthusiastic about your products, services or unique position in the marketplace. You lose contact for a couple weeks or a few months only to find that they’ve gone with a competitor when it came time to make a purchase.

How can you combat this problem? The solution is visibility. By consistently reaching your clients, associates or target market you remind them that you’re open for business. Reaching your target market is a multi-faceted process that incorporates a variety of methods which could include: email blasts, follow up messages, phone campaigns, social media, direct mail, press releases, media stories, video posts, blog posts, and many more. Whichever methods of connection you choose for your business, it’s important to stick to a plan as your clients are looking for consistency and presence.

Choosing not to remain visible to your target market leaves you in danger of quickly disappearing from their short-term memory. Just as we’ve learned from the non-mainstream events in the Olympics, you don’t want to run the risk of your clients forgetting about you so do some thinking today about how you can increase your business’ visibility on an ongoing basis.
